The Wolf’s Mate by L.C. Davis: My Review

The Wolf’s Mate series by L.C. Davis is a wild five novella series about a straight frat bro named Brad falling into a shifter romance novel and becoming a stand-in for the main character. This means that he is now Raul’s omega mate. Raul, the alpha werewolf hero from the The Wolf’s Mate, isn’t going to let Brad go without a fight.

The Wolf’s Mate brought me some of the most ridiculous fun I have ever had while reading. I seriously couldn’t stop laughing out loud at Brad and Raul’s antics.

Because each book in the series is less than 150 pages and read so seamlessly, I thought it would be helpful to do one big review over the entire series. Keep reading to see what I thought of The Wolf’s Mate.

The Wolf’s Mate series – Summary

This is a new mpreg serial following Brad, a quintessential frat bro and Raul, the brooding werewolf love interest he never asked for–and, in typical ’80s alpha male hero fashion, is never gonna give him up. Prepare for hot shifters, snark and banter, gay awakening, found family dynamics, sassy (and intrusive) siblings, a villainous heroine, cliffhangers galore, and meta mayhem.

The Wolf’s Mate series – My Review

The entire The Wolf’s Mate series is one very wild ride. I will be transparent and say that I started the first book in the series three times before I was able to just relax and embrace the fantasy of it all. Once I got over that initial knee-jerk reaction to give up on the book, I absolutely fell in love with the absurdity of it and devoured the entire rest of the series.

The main characters in The Wolf’s Mate series really make the whole thing. They are over-the-top caricatures of the people that they represent. Brad, the most perfectly named character ever created, is the dudiest bro to ever dude bro. Frat is everything to him. He is a jock to his core. His love interest in the series, Raul, is every overly dramatic and romantic alpha shifter from your favorite romance novel come to life.

This makes their dialogue absolutely hilarious. Here is an example of one of their very first interactions from Raul’s perspective:

"He slams the empty glass down on the table and says, "I'll drink you under the table anytime, anywhere, you fleabitten mofo." All I can do is gaze at him, a strange warmth stirring in my chest. "You are a charming creature, Brad."

Following along as Brad grows from being a typical straight frat bro to a man who is proud to be an omega and is deeply in love with another man is surprisingly poignant.

For Raul, it was very much instalove with him pursuing Brad from the moment that they meet. While Raul was not previously attracted to men, he had no issue accepting Brad as his mate while Brad heavily objects to the situation. Brad makes him work for their relationship in a way that Raul, and other characters like him in typical shifter romance novels, don’t often have to do. Here is a quote from Brad on this:

"You didn't seem to have any problem with taking on that 'responsibility' when you made me the Princess Peach to your Bowser," I said pointedly."

The writing in this book is superb. Seriously, the characterization is everything. Just executing this premise in a way that makes any sense at all means that L.C. Davis deserves a lot of praise. When the blurb above says “meta mayhem” it vastly understates the absurdity of a book about people being inside a book. But only sometimes. And they also get to the meet the author of the book inside the book that only half of the characters are from. It’s wild stuff.

You can easily knock out each of these books in about an hour. A person could, in theory (and with enough coffee), finish the entire series in one evening. In fact, now that all of the books have been released, I highly recommend reading them back to back like they are a single book.

Overall, I really recommend that you give this series a shot. It is hilarious, exciting, and full of fun.
