A Minute More by Cora Rose: My Review

You either love her or you hate her. Cora Rose busted onto the M/M romance scene a little over a year ago with her first book, Whit. She is known for writing contemporary new adult books about men who aren’t exactly the most stable. Her characters tend to be obsessive and are often straight. At least they think they are. You can find all of this and much, much more in A Minute More.

A Minute More is the start of the brand new series, Timeless, by Cora Rose. It features a dude bro sandwich shop employee and a closed-off nerdy type with a boatload of secrets. Somehow these two just might be perfect together. Keep reading to see what I thought of this contemporary M/M romance.

A Minute More – Summary

I’ll admit I’ve never had grandiose plans for my future. I’m really more of a “take it as it comes” sort of dude. But making minimum wage at a small-town sandwich shop wasn’t exactly what I had in mind after college graduation either. It may not be an exciting life, but it isn’t so bad. At least I have my amazing coworkers and friends who always try to make the workday fun.

Everyone, that is, except the new guy, Simon.

That guy is not fun. He’s broody and silent, but I can tell that something interesting is brewing just under his surface. Day after day I try to get his attention, try to coax him out of his shell. He won’t even look at me, let alone talk. It’s making me a little crazy, if I’m honest.

I don’t even know why I care—I’m not gay. But there’s just something about him that draws me in. He’s become this mystery that I need to unravel.

Until one night I get a small peek behind Simon’s mask—a shared kiss, just a minute in time, and then it’s gone.

I don’t even know what to think. All I know is I need more.

I want all the hidden parts of him.

I don’t understand this obsession, this need.

And I’m afraid that there isn’t much I wouldn’t do for just a minute more.

A Minute More – My Review

I really enjoyed reading A Minute More. This was a quick and light read that left me feeling good. It’s Cora Rose in fine form. If you have enjoyed her previous work, then you will be a fan of this book.

We first meet Wesley, the recent college grad and ridiculously chill sandwich shop employee. He has no idea what he wants to do with his life. He has a degree in sociology and zero ambition to do anything with it. All he knows is that the party/hookup scene is getting stale and he needs a change.

Cue Simon, the new sandwich shop employee. To put it bluntly, this guy does not belong at the shop. He doesn’t fit in with the rest of the employees. He dresses like a forty-year-old accountant, he refuses to talk to anyone, and he drives a strangely nice car. Simon is a code that no one at the shop can seem to crack. But Wesley sure wants to try.

Simon instantly captures his attention in a big way. Wesley finds himself spending a ridiculous amount of time focused on Simon. Which is a little odd for the straight dude bro.

"I haven't been able to do anything but look at him and think about him ever since he walked into the sandwich shop all those weeks ago."

The romance is solid. Wesley is insanely attracted to Simon, even if he isn’t aware that it’s attraction he is experiencing, and Simon is also very, very into Wesley. Not that he would ever let it show.

This comes to a head when Simon kisses Wesley. The kiss absolutely rocks Wesley’s world. Now he has to assess why he enjoys it so much. While also thinking he is straight. While also trying to make sure Simon doesn’t run away and never talk to him again. This leads to one of my favorite quotes from the book:

"Maybe I should have let him kiss me longer? Maybe I should have manned up and fucked him."

As all straight men would think in that situation, right? Poor oblivious Wes.

Wesley has to work hard to get Simon to open up and continue the friendship. There is a lot of pushback from Simon and he has quite a few secrets that he has to be forced to share. Some of the secrets you will be able to easily guess with the breadcrumbs Simon leaves. However, one bomb he drops literally left my mouth hanging open. I really enjoyed it!

This is one of the more realistic romances that Cora Rose has concocted. A Minute More was a nice change from the typical instalove we get. The pacing was slower than I have read from her before. While I enjoyed that Wesley and Simon had to work a little harder for their love, I did get a little skimmy near the end of the story.

The pros far outweigh the cons with this book, but I did think that the end of this story was unnecessarily dramatic. I thought Wesley acted a little out of character, and he didn’t trust Simon enough. The time jump was also a little jarring for me. I would have wanted Wes to listen to Simon a little more and maybe the time jump wouldn’t have been necessary. But I liked the character growth that Wesley experiences during that time. I just wish it could have been on page.

All of this being said, I recommend checking out this new adult contemporary read for its humor, drama, and sweetly obsessive guys. Enjoy!
