Well guys, I finally did it. I DNF’d more books than I finished this month.
Like, by a lot.
And I didn’t read that much.
Bit of a bummer.
However, I am still keeping my reading journal going!
Why? Well, because I have to finish something. Even if I can’t seem to finish a book.
Let’s jump into what happened!

I wrapped up Honeymoon for One by Keira Andrews.
Rereading this felt like coming home.
Seriously, I love this book. It was a great way to kick off the month!
Only good things can happen from here, right?
I read the blurb for Knowing You and I thought it sounded hilarious. I haven’t really read anything by E.M. Lindsey, but I see their books everywhere so I decided to give it a go.
The book is funny, but it was tough for me to read.
After struggling for five days I finally gave up at a mere 36%.
I knew going into the book that kids were going to a large part of the storyline, and that is usually enough to make me opt out of reading a book.
I am super sensitive to kids in books, but I thought I would give this book a try.
Unfortunately, I could not continue to read it. Everything I hate about kids in adult romance books was present in this book.
Maybe you would like it though!
Dock Tease was another book with a blurb that drew me in. I love an age-gap romance, so I was excited to read this.
At around 6% I realized that this book was not going to work for me, and I chucked it on the DNF pile.
There was too much forced set up for future books in the series, the characters were super one-dimensional, and nothing about it was sparking joy. So I moved on quickly.
I love Jesse H Reign. A lot! But, I did not like this book. And I am sad about it.
Work: Strictly Professional had so much going for it. It is written by Jesse H Reign, it follows Miller’s dad, Derek, and its age-gap.
Unfortunately, none of those things could make me like a single character in the book. Even a little bit.
I DNF’d this book at 45% after struggling to enjoy a single second of reading it for five days straight.
That sounds insanely harsh, but the book was a big miss for me.
So I tried to do that thing where I read a hockey book to get myself out of a funk.
Unfortunately, this time it didn’t work.
True North was kind of odd. Like, I just don’t know about people falling in love when there is a language barrier. Or when one of them is starving and homeless and the other is a millionaire.
It all read as kind of icky to me. Along with being pretty boring, I decided it wasn’t my jam at 34%.
In This Shadow, Longing is book three of Marina Vivancos’ Coven Ties series.
I was able to finish the book, but it is my least favorite in the series so far.
To be honest, it was really hard for me to connect with Cross. I felt that this book lacks a little of the depth I have grown to expect from Marina Vivancos’ books.
All of that said, it just might be the best book that I read this month.
I think it would be easy to call N.R. Walker one of my favorite authors of all time. However, I have now DNF’d (at minimum) the last three books I have read of hers. What that says, I’m not sure.
I stopped reading The Men From Echo Creek at 53%.
Percy and Albie had a really weird dynamic. Their compatibility seemed to rely solely on the fact that they were the only gay men that either had ever met.
I was uncomfortable reading the scenes where the two men were intimate. That was my sign to move on and pick a new book.
I saw that Lark Taylor had a new book releasing in May that I was excited about. I hadn’t read the other books in the Damned Connections series, so I decided to jump into the first book, Patience.
Turns out reading Patience was still not enough background to enjoy Lark Taylor’s latest release.
Patience is chock full of references to people and events from a previous series by Lark Taylor that you need to know about in order to enjoy this book. I have never read a less stand-alone first book in a series before. It was wild.
To put it simply, to enjoy this book you MUST have read The Reckless Damned series.
But, now I am in a tough spot because all of the books in that series have essentially been spoiled by my attempt to read Patience.
Wild stuff. I gave up trying to keep track of everyone at 73%. Besides Ferry and Leo were already together and it felt like the book could have ended anyway.
The Feral Alpha is the first book by Anna Wineheart that I have ever read.
I was surprised by how much I liked this book.
I might have been able to finish the book if not for the terrible side characters.
I hated every single second that Emmy was on page in this book. He is clearly a (very obnoxious) character from a previous book that unfortunately ruined this one for me.
I decided to toss in the towel at 61%
I got to end the month on one of my most anticipated books, Suddenly You by Cora Rose.
I have just started this book, but I am hopeful it will be a great read.
I love the concept of Magnus‘ brothers learning to accept him and themselves throughout this series.
If you were keeping track (I kind of hope that you weren’t) that is a single fully read this month, and eight DNF’s.
Just keeping it real.
If you would like to see what a month looks like where I actually finish more than one book, check out last month’s April 2024 reads.
Thanks for checking this out!
I read M/M romance books exclusively, and I help other readers find their next great M/M romance read.
