Best Dark and Spooky M/M Romance Books

Unhinged – Summary

Adam Mulvaney lives a double life. By day, he’s the spoiled youngest son of an eccentric billionaire. By night, he’s an unrepentant killer, one of seven psychopaths raised to right the wrongs of a justice system that keeps failing.

Noah Holt has spent years dreaming of vengeance for the death of his father, but when faced with his killer, he learns a daunting truth he can’t escape. His father was a monster.

Unable to ignore his own surfacing memories, Noah embarks on a quest to find the truth about his childhood with the help of an unlikely ally: the very person who murdered his father. Since their confrontation, Adam is obsessed with Noah, and he wants to help him uncover the answers he seeks, however dark they may be.

The two share a mutual attraction, but, deep down, Noah knows Adam’s not like other boys. Adam can’t love. He wasn’t born that way. But he refuses to let Noah go, and Noah’s not sure he wants him to.

Can Adam prove to Noah that passion, power, and protection are just as good as love?

What screams Halloween more than a family of murdering psychopaths? I absolutely love this book by Onley JamesIn fact, I highly recommend reading the entire Necessary Evils series to get your fix of blood, guts, gore, and insanely hot romance.

The first chapter of Unhinged is one of my favorite chapters of any book I’ve ever read. Seriously, this is a must read!

Soul Eater – Summary

Twenty years ago, monsters rose on earth and began a new age of civilization.

One where humans live in military-controlled, cramped and dirty cities along the coasts, and the majority of the United States is known as the Wastes. A lawless, desolate and dangerous place, teeming with monsters that have claimed the land for their own.

Including Wyn the Soul Eater.

He appears every three years, making his way across the country and slaughtering humans randomly, sucking them dry until they’re nothing but husks.

I’ve only been in the military for six months, but now I’m part of a unit tasked with trying to stop and capture him. And when I’m the only soldier out of hundreds that the Soul Eater leaves alive, I realise that… something about me has intrigued him.

But what is it? What could a twenty-three year old guy from the south, with no one and nothing in the world, have possibly done to capture the attention of a death monster with horns, blackened fingertips and a face hidden in the dark depths of his hood?

Soul Eater is the debut novel of Lily Mayne. It is the first in a planned post-apocalyptic fantasy series featuring monsters and human men falling in love. This m/m love story contains explicit content and is not suitable for young readers. It also contains scenes of violence, but don’t worry—they get their happy ending.

This is another book that doesn’t scream Halloween, but undeniably fits the spirit. In fact, the entire Monstrous series fits the bill with the myriad of deadly monsters that roam the dystopian world built by Lily Mayne.

Danny and Wyn are one of my favorite couples ever, and they deliver wildly steamy chemistry with a monstrous twist in Soul Eater

Kick at the Darkness – Summary

To live through the zombie apocalypse they have to survive each other first.

College freshman Parker Osborne is having the worst day ever. He humiliated himself trying to pick up a cute guy, he hasn’t made any friends at school, and his stupidly hot jerk of a TA gave him a crappy grade on his paper. He’s going to drop Adam Hawkins’ film class and start fresh tomorrow after he’s had a good sulk.

But Parker’s about to find out what a bad day really looks like—if he can survive the night.

A virus is unleashed, transforming infected people into zombie-like killers. After these quick and deadly creepers swarm campus, Parker only escapes thanks to Adam swooping him onto the back of his trusty motorcycle. Now they’re on the run—and stuck with each other.

When they’re not bickering, they’re fighting off the infected in a bloody battle for survival. Their only hope is to head east to Parker’s family, but orphaned Adam has a secret he’s not sure Parker will accept: he’s a werewolf. Can they trust each other enough to find some light in these dark days?

Guys, Kick at the Darkness is simply a winner. This is a great book to ready any time of year, but especially at Halloween. I mean, it has zombies, werewolves, and a motorcycle. What more could you possibly want?

Motel. Pool. – Summary

In the mid-1950s, Jack Dayton flees his working-class prospects in Omaha and heads to Hollywood, convinced he’ll be the next James Dean. But sleazy casting couches don’t earn him stardom, and despair leads to a series of poor decisions that ultimately find him at a cheap motel off Route 66, lifeless at the bottom of the pool.

Sixty years later, Tag Manning, feeling hopeless and empty, flees his most recent relationship mistake and takes to the open road. On a roundabout route to Las Vegas, he pulls over to rest at an isolated spot on Route 66. There’s no longer a motel or pool, but when Tag resumes his journey to Vegas, he finds he’s transporting a hitchhiking ghost. Jack and Tag come to find much-needed friends in each other, but one man is a phantom and the other is strangely cursed. Time is running out for each of them, and they must face the fact that a future together may not only be a gamble… it may not be in the cards.

Motel. Pool. is much more than a ghost story. It is one of the most epic romances I’ve read. The storyline will leave you thinking about the book for years to come.

Jump into this paranormal romance by Kim Fielding if you are willing to welcome Halloween with some tears.

A Frost of Cares – Summary

Looking for a fresh start, historian Luke Alcott takes on a job cataloguing the archives in an old army training centre. Eelmoor Hall is an old house on a lonely heath and the only other living soul on site is Sergeant Jay McBride, the surly caretaker. But Luke can’t escape the feeling he’s being watched, and as the halls echo with invisible footsteps and his sleep is haunted by nightmares, he realises that he and Jay aren’t alone in this house.
The Mistletoe Bride has been trapped here a very long time. She’s cold, angry, and desperate. And she has no intention of letting Luke leave until he’s found her—or joined her in death. As the snow begins to fall, Luke and Jay must risk all to save each other from this vengeful ghost.

If you are looking for a book to genuinely scare you this Halloween, then you have found it with A Frost of CaresThis book is one part romance and one part ghost story, but all parts a fantastic read by Amy Rae Durreson

This is an incredibly deep story of struggling and healing with ghosts both outside and within.

Feral – Summary

Sometimes kissing the Beast doesn’t turn it into a Prince Charming—instead, he’s a charming prince you want to punch…

Jules is an ordinary nineteen-year-old omega from a perfectly respectable family. He’s not the most beautiful, or the smartest, or the strongest of the four Blake siblings. And he’s fine with it, really. He isn’t ugly or anything, but by omega standards, he’s nothing special. “Nothing special” describes Jules’s whole life. It’s utterly boring.

So when strange things start happening in their house, it piques Jules’s curiosity. There’s a beast in the Blake family mansion; Jules is sure of it. He sometimes hears growls and screams coming from the basement, and the men guarding the door look positively terrified.

What could terrify grown alphas? Jules will have to investigate!

But his investigation comes with surprises…like the Beast’s overwhelming effect on Jules’s omega nature. It doesn’t mean anything. Of course it doesn’t. Jules is just curious; that’s all.

Curiosity can change a life, but when you’re attracted to a feral alpha whose real face you haven’t even seen…will it change for the better? What if the Beast is no Prince Charming but a cold-hearted, cynical bastard? A bastard Jules shouldn’t want—but does. A bastard Jules should stay away from—but can’t.

While this isn’t the first book in The Wrong Alpha series, it is by far my favorite. This shapeshifting, paranormal romance can be read as a standalone, and is an easy pick for Halloween with its fun play on Beauty and the Beast.

The world building by Alessandra Hazard is spectacular here! Feral is an omegaverse book, so you know this was a spicy read.

Recalling My Demon – Summary

I’m told Nethermire House is haunted, but the truth is even stranger.

Nethermire is home to an eccentric 80-year-old and the young man she claims is her great-nephew.

Except he’s not.

He’s a demon.

Brin’s chaotic, bratty ways draw me to him. When he calls me Daddy, I’m a goner. I want to protect him, take care of him, and call him mine.

But when he gets summoned to hell, our happiness is shattered.

Can I recall him to my side, or will I lose him forever?

This fall there is a multiauthor series called Possessive Love dropping M/M paranormal romance books featuring demons every few days starting September 4th. The book I am most excited to read is Recalling My Demon by Colette Davison. Clearly this book will have some heat, and I love the humor and the entire premise.

The other books that I am most excited about from the Possessive Love series are Terrible Lovely Demon by Odessa Hywell (which drops October 10th), and My Daddy Demon by Aster Rae (dropping September 9th).

The Mysterious and Amazing Blue Billings – Summary

Levi Black is at a crossroads. After suffering a loss and breaking up a long-term relationship, he’s looking for a change. When he receives the news he’s inherited a house in York, he seizes the opportunity to begin a new chapter in his life.

However, when he gets there, he finds a house that has never kept its occupants for very long. Either through death or disinclination, no one stays there, and after a few days of living in the place, Levi can understand why. Strange noises can be heard at all hours of the day and night, and disturbing and scary things begin to happen to him. He never believed in ghosts before, but when events take a sinister turn, he knows he must look for help. He finds it in the unlikely form of the blue-haired leader of a ghost tour.

Blue Billings is edgy, beautiful, and lost. Utterly lost. He conceals so many secrets that some days it’s a miracle he remembers his own name. He knows that he should ignore Levi because he threatens the tenuous grip Blue has on survival. But there’s something about the kind-eyed man that draws Blue to him. Something that demands he stay and fight for him when he would normally run in the opposite direction.

As the two men investigate the shocking truth behind Levi’s house, they also discover a deep connection that defies the short length of time they’ve known each other. But when events escalate and his life is on the line, Levi has to wonder if it was wise to trust the Mysterious and Amazing Blue Billings.

This book has been on my TBR list for forever. I will definitely be reading it this fall. It seems like the perfect Halloween read with its haunted house and its edgy and mysterious blue haired loner.

I am excited to read a Lily Morton book that is on the dark and edgy side.

Wolfsong – Summary

The Bennett family has a secret:
They’re not just a family, they’re a pack.
Wolfsong is Ox Matheson’s story.

Oxnard Matheson was twelve when his father taught him a lesson: Ox wasn’t worth anything and people would never understand him. Then his father left.

Ox was sixteen when the energetic Bennett family moved in next door, harboring a secret that would change him forever. The Bennetts are shapeshifters. They can transform into wolves at will. Drawn to their magic, loyalty, and enduring friendships, Ox feels a gulf between this extraordinary new world and the quiet life he’s known, but he finds an ally in Joe, the youngest Bennett boy.

Ox was twenty-three when murder came to town and tore a hole in his heart. Violence flared, tragedy split the pack, and Joe left town, leaving Ox behind. Three years later, the boy is back. Except now he’s a man – charming, handsome, but haunted – and Ox can no longer ignore the song that howls between them.

I have to include this epic werewolf paranormal M/M romance from TJ Klune. Wolfsong is beautiful, evocative, and sexy. Ox is such a great character, and I absolutely love getting inside his head.

I can easily imagine snuggling up in a blanket with a warm apple cider ploughing through the entire Green Creek series.

Whispers in the Dark – Summary

You never know what’s hiding under your bed…

At twenty-four, Cody has already lost hope of having a life of his own. All his time is spent playing nurse to a dying, spiteful step-father and maid to his bully half-brother. His only escapes are playing his favorite online fantasy game, Black Oasis, and talking to the strange, unearthly presence under his bed that may or may not actually exist.

But everything changes when his nightly visitor, who introduces himself as Nor, starts talking back.

As their connection deepens, Nor invites Cody into the surreal world existing just beyond his nightmares, filled with haughty demons, passion-killing pet bugs named Gef, and a dark landscape that is oddly familiar. With his sweet but monstrous companion by his side, Cody might finally gain the life of freedom and adventure that he’s always wanted.

Join Nor and Cody as they unearth the true meaning of hope, passion, and a love of endless depths that spans between worlds in Whispers in the Dark, the first book in Knight and Mayne’s co-authored queer, monster romance series, Black Oasis.

What a better way to celebrate Halloween than by reading about someone falling in love with the monster under their bed? Whispers in the Dark is such a unique read. Lily Mayne is really shaking up the paranormal romance game with her monster romances. This is a fantastic collab with Nikole Knight and I am excited to see where the series goes.

Bro and the Beast – Summary

When musclebound frat bro Brad gets run off the road by a reckless driver, he thinks it’s game over. When he wakes up inside his twin brother’s favorite corny shifter romance novel, he realizes the real game is just beginning.

Desperate to get back to a world where he’s top dog, Brad finds himself in the crosshairs of Raul, the menacingly hot hero of The Wolf’s Mate, who’s intent on teaching Brad a whole new meaning to the word alpha.

Not only does Raul insist that Brad is an omega– his omega–but Brad is going to have to come to terms with the fact that he isn’t just a part of this fictional world. He’s a stand-in for the main character, and the only way out is to make sure he gets to his happily ever after.

No one is more shocked than I am that Bro and the Beast is such a fantastic read. I honestly didn’t know what I was getting myself into the first time I read this gem by L.C. Davis

After devouring all of the books in The Wolf’s Mate series, I can attest that this is seriously good stuff. Somehow, the brooding werewolves, ridiculous banter, improbable mayhem, and mpreg all work together so well. Make sure to add this to your Halloween TBR list.

Only One Coffin – Summary

I’m stuck sharing a coffin with the world’s perkiest vampire. This vacation is going to suck.

After centuries of eternal existence, and still mourning the loss of my lover to vicious slayers, I needed a few days of peaceful solitude at the Hotel Draugr.

But thanks to a double-booking mishap, I’m forced to share my coffin with Kilroy, a freshly bitten vampire who loves his new afterlife as much as he loves hanging ten. My unexpected roommate is determined to show me how “totally awesome” being a vampire can be.

Doesn’t he know vampires don’t do sunshine of any kind?

Through epic snowball fights and midnight meetups at vampire speakeasies, the ice around my not-technically-beating heart begins to melt. And during days sharing our too-small coffin, one part of me has trouble staying dead.

Maybe this budding relationship has teeth…that is, if we can evade the slayers closing in on the hotel.

I couldn’t have a Halloween book recommendation list without a vampire book! I am a huge A.J. Truman fan from his Browerton University series, so this book really intrigued me.

Only One Coffin is the cutest and campiest little paranormal M/M romance. It is almost as sweet as the Halloween candy you should eat while you read it.

Oh, Sacred Dark – Summary

Tyler’s first priority is to protect his coven. Not because he’s the High Witch’s right-hand-man. Not because he was born a Dom. But because this is his home, and a protector is who he is.

When a new person is fostered by the coven, Tyler is immediately suspicious. Roman is a sub, sure, but his old coven is bad news. They’re all convicted of practicing Chaos Magic, so…why isn’t Roman?

Tyler is sure that Roman is up to no good. The sub refuses to integrate with the coven. Will avoid meals, barely leaves his room, doesn’t talk to anybody. There’s something wrong there, and Tyler won’t stop until he finds out what.

Turns out, there’s a lot more to Roman than meets the eye—a dark past that’s left scars he can’t even imagine. In the end, Roman might not be someone Tyler has to defend against…but someone he needs to protect.

I am such a huge fan of Marina Vivancos’ work. Oh, Sacred Dark is not just a great book to read at Halloween, for its magic and elite paranormal worldbuilding, but literally anytime.

The entire Coven Ties series is absolutely spectacular, and I cannot recommend it enough.
